Graphing Linear Equations (Standard Form)

This lesson focuses on graphing linear equations in standard form. The standard form of a linear equation is given by Ax + By = C, where A, B, and C are constants. This method requires converting the equation to slope-intercept form or using intercepts to graph the line.

Standard Form Overview

The standard form of a linear equation is Ax + By = C. To graph a line from this form:

  1. Find the x-intercept by setting y = 0 and solving for x.
  2. Find the y-intercept by setting x = 0 and solving for y.
  3. Plot these intercepts on the graph and draw the line through them.

Examples of Graphing Linear Equations

Example 1:

Graph the equation 2x + 3y = 6.

Graph of 2x + 3y = 6

Example 2:

Graph the equation -x + 2y = 4.

Graph of -x + 2y = 4

Example 3:

Graph the equation 3x - y = 9.

Graph of 3x - y = 9

Example 4:

Graph the equation -2x + 4y = 8.

Graph of -2x + 4y = 8

Example 5:

Graph the equation 4x + y = 12.

Graph of 4x + y = 12

Example 6:

Graph the equation x - 3y = -3.

Graph of x - 3y = -3
